A mai cikkben felvázolunk néhány fontosabb dolgot, hogy milyen ujdonságokat tartalmaz a Siebel 8.  További információért ajánlom a "Siebel 8 New Features" nevű Oracle tanfolyamot.

Jelenleg is Siebel 8 upgrade projekten dolgozunk.

User Interface
Firstly the user interface looks different. The Siebel 8 UI looks a little more "washed out" with a lot more white space. The screen tabs can be configured with picture icons.

Case insensitive querying is now better supported through the application. This is implemented through creating an additional column for the desired field which will be stored in case insensitive format whereby the query on that field would use the case insensitive formatted column.

Siebel Task UI
Siebel Task UI (my favourite) is a great enhancement in Siebel 8. This allows the Siebel user to complete tasks in a wizard like interface. Tasks can be paused and resumed from the Universal Inbox. Task UI is great because it can reduce the number of "clicks" the user has to perform and the number of different views the user must navigate to in order to complete a task (especially repeatable tasks that are time consuming). There is a lot of oppurtunity to automate data transactions in the background through the use of transient business components. The client are very excited about implementing Task UI in the new Siebel version so I will surely be writing some blogs about this in the future.

Haley Business Rules
Siebel 8 now includes the Haley Business Rules engine which is another way to implement validation and automation within the Siebel application. The selling point of Haley is that business rules can be written in a language that as english oriented syntax which could potentially be administered by business analysts without programming knowledge. Also the rules are stored in a central location.

From what I have seen so for, other than what I mentioned above, the haley business rules does not do anything better than the existing Data Validation (DVM). Also the Haley validation error messages always include default text at the beginning of the message such as:

Executing 'My Haley Rule' rule module returned the following invalid validation result.......

If the business just wants the error message displayed this is not possible with Haley Business Rules.

The Haley Business Rules are written in a syntax that is english oriented, you must still learn the syntax and learn how to administer these rules which is quite a learning curve.

Audit Trail
Siebel 7 had audit trail of inserts and updates to records. Siebel 8 Audit Trail now also includes auditing of record reads and export of data.

Server Management
In Siebel 8 you can now change component parameters and the parameter change is applied without having to restart the component. You can also set components to "Manual Start" through the click of a button to prevent them starting up automatically when the server starts. Components and Tasks can be paused and resumed. The Siebel File System can now be partitioned accross multiple servers. There is now a single security adapter that can be used for both LDAP and ADSI. It is now possible for adminstrators to create the user in Siebel and this can be automatically created in LDAP or ADSI.

Siebel Remote
The local database can now be encrypted. Siebel Remote now also supports Real Time Syncronization (RTS) which allows syncronization with the Siebel Server in real time.

Changes to Siebel Tools
Siebel has now finally implemented changes to the Siebel Tools IDE which other IDEs already had years ago! Siebel Tools now has a multiple document interface. You can now configure radio buttons. The canvas editors (such as the workflow canvas editor) now makes it easier to create workflows, automatically formatting the connectors with right angles etc. There are new Siebel Operation Steps in workflows including:

- QueryBiDirectional: Essentially this means you can execute query in forward backward mode
- NextRecord/PrevRecord: You can now query and scroll through multiple records.

You can now view and edit the workflow steps through just left clicking the workflow step, you no longer have to right click and select from the right click menu. You can now deploy and activate the workflow from Siebel Tools.

An expression builder can now be used in Siebel Tools to build search specification expressions. The User Properties (such as BC User Properties) can now be created through picking from a list of properties in the pick applet. You can now write your own validation message on field validation.

If you create a new table column with a predefault value, at the point that you Apply the table it will actually populate the new column with the predefault value for all records automatically. This did not happen in Siebel 7.

The Strongly Typed scripting engine (STE) is now used in Siebel 8. In theory this means better performing script due to early binding. Script Assist and business services can now execute methods as an object would. There is also an option to use Fix and Go which means a better debugging experience.

Siebel Update Server
Not much to say on this one, you can setup a Siebel Update Server which can be used to centrally manage and deploy patches to the Siebel product.

Application Deployment Manager
ADM now supports full deployment of Siebel objects to migrate a new release of the application. ADM can now deploy any files to the server, repository changes and master data changes. Basically when you want to migrate a release, you would create a package (very similar to how you would migrate a java package), baseline/source control this package, and deploy it to the target environment(s) using ADM.

The challenges with ADM are:

1. ADM is very complicated to setup.
2. You need to have a source environment that would have a migration path to production where the master data cannot be changed unless authorized. For example, in our current Siebel 7 implementation, our source environment is the development environment where developers change master data whenever they want to. This becomes difficult because the source environment must be a different environment to the development environment. This means another environment to have to manually create reference data and ensure it is correct.
3. Our current implementation already has a mostly automated custom migration process in place. Whereby we baseline all objects in Visual Source Safe and label these objects for a release. It would be less time consuming and more cost effective for us to just re-use this existing process after upgrading to Siebel 8 rather than setting up ADM etc.

Siebel Application Response Measurement (SARM)
SARM was already available in Siebel 7 where you could analyze the performance data using SARMAnalyzer. SARMAnalyzer is used to just convert SARM data into XML/CSV format. In Siebel 8, a new tool is available called SARMQuery which is a command line tool which can be used to query for the SARM data that you want. There is also a Siebel Diagnostic tool that can be purchased which provides a GUI wrapper over SARMQuery.

Siebel Search
The new Siebel Search architecture supports searching accross multiple business components and the Siebel File System. Siebel Search can be administered/configured through the UI at run time. The search architecture utilizes funky indexing so that search is optimized even on new data.
